Highway Safety - Finding information about bridge safety in your hometown.

Posted on November 14, 2008
“London Bridge Is Falling Down” The lyrics from the well-known Mother Goose nursery rhyme talking about bridges falling down, pins and needles bend and break, build it up with wood and clay will wash away, we must build it up again, iron and steel will bend and break and how will we build it up, should give us pause for quiet contemplation about our own home towns’ infrastructure...

Water Safety: A drink to good health?

Posted on November 13, 2008
Yesterday, I rep'd my city. Yup, I gloated about our clean drinking water and gave the Big Apple a pat on the back for doing things right when it comes to water safety. I also commented that you don't want to know the inevitable results when city's don't take proper measures to ensure the safety of their water...

Water Contamination: How pure is purified water"

Posted on November 12, 2008
Some of you may know this, some of you may not (and most of you probably don't care, but it's relevant) : I currently live in New York City. By the end of my first week living here, I had spent a large portion of my checking account on bottled water. Sounds silly? Yes, but I'm naturally a thirsty girl and I drink a lot, which posed a problem considering there was no way in hell I was going to drink water from the tap in New York City (If you've visited midtown - my neighborhood - you'd understand why...

Construction Site Safety: Freak accident on Indianapolis road construction site.

Posted on November 12, 2008

He was able to climb out of the trench but took only a few steps before collapsing and died at the scene. The employee of Simmons Co., of Pittsboro was using a power saw equipped with guard must have had the saw kick back with such force that it jumped across his throat causing a gash...

Truck Accident Prevention: Truck backing over pedestrian woman is preventable.

Posted on November 11, 2008
I've written previously about rear runovers and the use of rear beeping or auditory warning devices. On November 7, 2008 it happened again when a woman in downtown Des Moines was backed over by a garbage truck. I've covered this subject more extensively on the Lombardi Law Firm blog, The Verdict, as well as on the InjuryBoard where the emphasis was on prevention...

Food Poisoning: Get over it (literally)

Posted on November 11, 2008
We've already established that there's no guaranteed way to predict whether or not someone will contract a food-borne illness; granted, it's relatively likely an illness will result if one eats raw hamburger, consumes home-canned goods that aren't sealed properly, or drinks the water in Mexico...

Using the arbitration process to game the news media, investors and the public.

Posted on November 10, 2008
This case begs the question; when is arbitration nothing more than window dressing? My French-Canadian mother turned eighty-one on November 5th. Mom is what you call old school. When something bad happened to us after we kids had done something stupid, she’d say, “God is punishing you...

Food Poisoning: Making it's mark on the masses

Posted on November 09, 2008
I know most InjuryBoard readers probably follow the news on a daily basis. So you're probably already one step ahead of this post because you're aware of the mass food poisoning that's taken 81 students by storm in China. Though there hasn't been much information released yet concerning how serious the affects are and what caused the illness, I find it particularly interesting (and relevant) considering the articles we've been writing...

Interstate Highway Safety - Ghost Drivers - Part II

Posted on November 09, 2008
Today we further develop the issue of Ghost Drivers, English as an official language and what it may say about our culture. I ask the question: Is the answer about why some people turn the wrong way on the interstate, any indication of our mindset about diversity in language and one way that we are hurting our own economy? But what about the language barrier issue; should we be looking at this issue differently? Do our attitudes about being English speaking Americans say something to us about the cost of foolish pride? If it’s a language issue then perhaps we need to reexamine our own thinking and expand it...

Food poisoning: Is E Coli coming for you?

Posted on November 08, 2008
It's a species of bacteria that live in the small intestine. Even if I didn't know that it causes food poisoning, I'd be disgusted (ehk - who wouldn't?)! It's E. Coli - and to be honest folks, even it's name isn't pretty. E. Coli is a common type of bacteria...

Interstate Highway Safety: Part I - Ghost drivers continue to be a problem on U.S. Interstate Highways

Posted on November 08, 2008
Whenever a potential client calls with a wrong-way turn collision I ask myself a question. Was it booze or drugs, old age, sign pollution, improper sign wording, a language issue, a lighting issue, being in a hurry, being distracted or just inattentiveness that causes someone to turn the wrong way? I’m not talking about falling asleep or a sudden medical condition or any of the causes that makes someone simply cross the center line on an undivided highway...

Food poisoning: We'd prevent it if we could...

Posted on November 07, 2008
Isn't it true that there's no way to avoid food poisoning? I mean, honestly, if there was, wouldn't we all be doing everything in our power to ensure that we don't contract an illness? (I tell you, one of the girls at work left early today after a bout with food poisoning...

Food Poisoning: Why me?!

Posted on November 05, 2008
If it isn't common sense, my previous two postings have shown that food poisoning can strike anyone on a global scale, and it can occur for a variety of reasons. In yesterday's article (concerning Montezuma's Revenge, also known as traveller's diarrhea), I highlighted a few of the potential causes...

Food poisoning: Montezuma's Revenge

Posted on November 04, 2008
As discussed yesterday, food poisoning strikes 76 million each year - and this is strictly limited to counts of food poisoning in the U.S. It fails to factor in the millions of tourists who are struck by food poisoning on their travels - the illness commonly known as "Montezuma's revenge...

Food Poisoning: Generally what is food poisoning?

Posted on November 03, 2008
I, myself, have never experienced it (knock on wood), but the stories I've heard are downright discomforting. It occurs in various forms and can be caused by any number of sources. It's food poisoning (du-du-duhhhh) - the ultimate discomfort. Food poisoning generally only lasts a few days, but it strikes quickly and generally claims its victims within 36-48 hours after consuming the poisoned substance...

Federal Preemption: Why is the federal preemption doctrine more important to the Washington power brokers than NY's clean air?

Posted on November 03, 2008
Using the federal preemption doctrine the federal government has stopped New York City from taking action towards improving air quality in the City. Whether you know it or not we are all chocking on the pollution caused by how the federal preemption doctrine is being applied to state law and how it fails to improve the way we live...

Federal Preemption: Are lobbying dollars influencing medical research opinions?

Posted on November 03, 2008
Here is how it’s supposed to work. Pharmaceutical companies conduct research and develop drugs that treat our ailments and diseases. During the R&D phase the pharmaceutical company scientists conduct experiments; and when the research shows promise and appears to have indicia of being safe for humans the FDA through it’s medical scientists review the application along with all the research data and if it appears safe they approve the drug for sale to people; people like you and I and our mothers and fathers...
