Quote of the Week

Posted on September 03, 2010
"By the old laws of England, the husband was called the lord of the wife; he was literally regarded as her sovereign, inasmuch that the murder of a man by his wife was called treason (petty as distinguished from high treason), and was more cruelly avenged than was usually the case with high treason, for the penalty was burning to death...

On Serious Work

Posted on September 02, 2010
As I'm a fan of neither lists that rank art or those who deems themselves masters of telling others the lowly masses what art counts as real and serious, it was with much amusement that I read this interview with lady authoresses Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Weiner, who discussed the New York Time's lady problem and over-infatutation with Jonathan "Genius" Franzen and other Serious Male Writers...

Critic of Biblical Gender Inclusion: Mansplaining Needed

Posted on September 01, 2010
If you are of the opinion that gender neutral language doesn't matter, consider the following. The Bible, a text purporting to represent the truth about the human condition is masculine-oriented, thus alienating half of the human population. A defense, authored by one Wayne Grudem, of the masculine-oriented language of this text, ironically, complains that gender-neutral language drops fathers, sons, and brothers from this text thus rendering the text inaccurate and displaying an "antipathy" toward specific men...

On "Ramming the Gay Agenda" Down Throats

Posted on August 31, 2010
[Trigger Warning- Sexual assault language] "I don?t mind gays. But I don?t want ?em stuffing it down my throat all the time." -Senator Chris Buttars, Utah (R) "Mainstream Americans began understanding the urgency of these threats, and ultimately decided that they could not stand idly by while the radical gay agenda was forced down their throats...

Marriage, Tolerance, and HIV

Posted on August 30, 2010
The anti-gay hate group MassResistance put out a dishonest propaganda piece a couple of years ago, after the same-sex marriage victory Massachusetts' highest court, claiming that same-sex marriage has caused an increase in HIV/AIDS. Of course, MassResistance didn't provide a peer-reviewed study, much less evidence, for this claim...

Quotes of the Week

Posted on August 27, 2010
A particular favorite among the oh-so-clever "marriage defense" crowd. Cite unnecessary, because really, don't we hear this all the time? "I think the amusing part is that some people are trying to make [same-sex marriage] about equal rights when that is not the issue...

A Unique Male Perspective on Faith

Posted on August 26, 2010
I sometimes read the Washington Post's "On Faith" panels. The format of these panels is for writers from various spiritual backgrounds to write brief posts addressing various religious, moral, spiritual, or political topics from their unique perspectives...

Book Review: Lilith's Brood

Posted on August 25, 2010
[This review contains spoilers]Lilith's Brood, written by legendary author Octavia Butler, is a lengthy three-volume novel that I will try to sum up in a way that does it justice but that is not, like, a 200 page review. The setting of Lilith's Brood is post-apocalyptic...

Jennifer Roback Morse Defends "Marriage Defender" David Blankenhorn

Posted on August 24, 2010
Jennifer Roback Morse, President and Founder of the Ruth Institute (which is a project of the National Organization for [Heterosexual] Marriage), has taken issue with Judge Walker's refusal to qualify David Blankenhorn as an expert in the Prop 8 trial...

Cardinal Catholicly Opines on Same-Sex Parents

Posted on August 23, 2010
[Trigger warning: Hate speech] In response to Mexico City's legalization of same-sex marriage: "Cardinal Juan Sandoval Iniguez, archbishop of Guadalajara and one of the most senior prelates in the nation, in recent days made especially harsh comments widely seen here as offensive...

Quote of the Day

Posted on August 21, 2010
Sometimes, you just read a passage and it's meaningful. In the following sentences, death, change, non-violence, and inter-connectedness were implicated, for me. Perhaps it will resonate with you, as well:"One autumn day, I was in a park, absorbed in the contemplation of a very small, beautiful leaf, shaped like a heart...

Prop 8 Trial Resources and Updates

Posted on August 19, 2010
The video and document evidence in the Prop 8 trial (Perry v. Schwarzenegger) has been posted. In addition, the 9th Circuit has created a website containing all information and orders related to the federal appeal. Most recently, the 9th Circuit has granted Protect Marriage's motion for a stay (PDF) of Judge Walker's order which means that, unfortunately, same-sex couples will not get to legally marry in California during the appeal period...

ABA Backs Marriage Equality

Posted on August 18, 2010
A couple weeks ago, the American Bar Association's House of Delegates adopted a resolution (PDF) urging states to "eliminate all of their legal barriers to civil marriage between two persons of the same sex who are otherwise eligible to marry." The American Bar Association is a voluntary association of lawyers whose mission is "To serve equally our members, our profession and the public by defending liberty and delivering justice as the national representative of the legal profession...

The Meaning of Marriage: Protecting the Womenfolk Edition

Posted on August 17, 2010
[Trigger Warning: Sexual assault references]Now that a federal judge has found a ban on same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional having rejected the Responsible Procreation "marriage defense" argument, let's watch anti-equality advocates scramble to come up with other after-the-fact reasons for opposing same-sex marriage...

Prop 8: We Won, Now What?

Posted on August 16, 2010
While the common assumption about Perry v. Schwarzenegger (popularly known as the Prop 8 case) is that it will eventually reach the US Supreme Court, there are now rumblings, based on Judge Walker's order (PDF), that it may stop in California. Why, you may ask? Those who seek to appeal the decision, an association called Protect Marriage, may lack standing to do so...

Subtext Friday!

Posted on August 13, 2010
Hey everybody, it's the lesbian subtext Lake Scene in Fried Green Tomatoes:I was maybe 12 or 13 when I saw this movie for the first time, and even then I wanted Idgie to be my girlfriend picked up on Idgie's heartbreak over Ruth's marriage announcement...

The "Catholic Answer" to Enduring a Lesbian Family Member

Posted on August 12, 2010
Thanks once again to reader John, for sending me some more blogging material. This bit the forum of the site "Catholic Answers," which has an "Ask An Apologist" feature which, well, it's sort of self-explanatory. Of particular interest to me was the question of what to do if one finds out that one's family member is a lesbian...

The Meaning of Marriage: "Un-Divorced" Edition

Posted on August 11, 2010
[Cross-posted at Our Big Gayborhood]In the federal Prop 8 trial (Perry v. Schwarzenegger, which the equality side just won!), "marriage defense" attorney Chuck Cooper argued that: "[T]he central purpose of marriage in virtually all societies and at all times has been to channel potentially procreative sexual relationships into enduring stable unions to increase the likelihood that any offspring will be raised by the man and woman who brought them into the world...

Time's Woman Problem: Inflammatory Headline Edition

Posted on August 10, 2010
A recent Time headline: "Why Are French Women Killing Their Babies?" The title suggests a nationality- and gender-based spate of baby-killing, no? The reality, if we read the article, is that 5 mentally-ill French women have killed their infants since 2003...

Gay Dude Plays Prop 8 Turncoat, Badly

Posted on August 09, 2010
As I made my Prop 8 trial reading rounds, I predicted coming across an article like this one by Alex Knepper, a self-described gay undergraduate who also writes at the dude-dominated Independent Gay Forum. (I've run into these fellows before). In this particular article, Knepper touts his gay male identity and then goes on to shockingly and traitorously claim "I simply don?t think that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional...

Perry v. Schwarzenegger: Prop 8 Trial Rundown

Posted on August 06, 2010
As many of you have heard, a federal judge has found California's Proposition 8, the voter initiative that took away the right for same-sex couples to marry, to be unconstitutional. If you remember, the equality side argued that Prop 8 was a violation of the Due Process Clause and Equal Protection Clause of the US Constitution and that Prop 8 should be subjected to heightened scrutiny because it discriminates against the historically-marginalized group of gays and lesbians on the basis of sexual orientation and sex...

The Plight of Heterosexual Couples

Posted on August 05, 2010
If an employee adds a same-sex partner to her or his health care plan, the federal government taxes the value of the coverage paid by the employer. Heterosexual couples who are legally married do not have to pay this extra tax while, thanks to the Defense of Marriage Act, even same-sex couples who are legally married do...

Equality Foes Othering of Non-Whites

Posted on August 04, 2010
I've always noted with sarcasm that there's nothing more resonating than when privileged, conservative hetereosexual whites who oppose LGBT rights express their so very deep concern with the LGBT movement's misappropriation of black civil rights language...

Women In History: Taming the Wild Savage

Posted on August 03, 2010
The Times recently ran an article about research that has "shed new light on the Holocaust from a gender perspective." Now, I have not yet read this actual research but I would be highly interested in doing so (as opposed to just reading about it in a news article) since Adolf Hitler opposed feminism and believed in the inherent superiority of the great Anglo male...

Love: NOM Style

Posted on August 02, 2010
Last week, we looked at a National Organization for [Heterosexual] Marriage (NOM) supporter's violent sign advocating the death of same-sex couples. In that post, I said that NOM had yet to repdudiate the sign. However, buried in the middle of a letter touting "the incredible displays of intolerance from supporters of gay marriage" and asking its $upporters for money, NOM claims to have actually repudiated the violent sign...

Quote of the Day

Posted on July 30, 2010
We can thank reader John for passing along this gem. Phylis Schalfy on whether the country is ready for a woman president: "'I don't see it happening because I don't see one coming up the line in either party,' she said. Democrat Hillary Clinton lost to Barack Obama because 'people don't want to elect a feminist because they are not likeable...

NOM Supporter Advocates Violent "Solution to Same-Sex Marriage"

Posted on July 29, 2010
[Trigger Warning: Violent Hate Speech] "What?s really sad to me is how enormously hateful the [equality] protesters have been. They have gone over the line....Hate is not a family value. Americans who came together across lines of race, creed, and color to protect marriage as one man and one woman are not haters...

In Which the Male Gaze Continues to Define Woman

Posted on July 28, 2010
"Woman is not born: she is made. In the making, her humanity is destroyed. She becomes symbol of this, symbol of that: mother of the earth, slut of the universe; but she never becomes herself because it is forbidden for her to do so." -Andrea Dworkin "Men look at women...

Cheerleading a Sport, But Not at Quinnipaic

Posted on July 27, 2010
In 2009, Quinnipaic University cut its women's volleyball team, pledging to replace it with a new sport for women- competitive cheer (also known as cheerleading). In response to this move, several members of the volleyball team sued, claiming that the university violated Title IX- the federal law mandating equal opportunity in education...

Images of Subtle Sexism

Posted on July 26, 2010
"[T]he LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." "Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man." -Genesis 2:7-22 Check out this Modern English gender pronoun chart that's in the Wikipedia entry for "He": Observations: 1) While the letter "f" precedes "m" alphabetically, notice how "male" precedes "female" on this chart (and others)...
