Posted on April 29, 2010
From MALDEF: The effects of Arizona?s new immigration law (SB 1070) have created a national crisis that is resonating throughout the country, said NCLR (National Council of La Raza), the largest national Latino civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States...

PRO-IMMIGRATION RALLIES SET FOR SATURDAY AROUND THE COUNTRY

Posted on April 28, 2010
On May 1, 2006, hundreds of thousands of immigrants around the country demonstrated against a restrictive immigration bill introduced in Congress. This weekend, similar demonstrations will occur around the US. I'll be attending my 20th law school reunion in Chicago this weekend and am hoping to attend that rally...

ARIZONA BOYCOTT MOMENTUM GROWING

Posted on April 28, 2010
"Boycott Arizona" is now the 47th most popular search phrase in Google and that is surely a sign that efforts to sanction the state are accelerating. That little factoid should DEEPLY worry those in Arizona who are dismissing the threat (including Governor Brewer)...

TUCSON SHERIFF WON'T ENFORCE NEW LAW

Posted on April 28, 2010
Love this guy. Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik called SB1070 "stupid" and told journalists today that the new law is designed to deflect attention from fiscal mismanagement by the legislature. From Huffington Post: Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, who I am assuming is something of a master of the "complex and demanding craft of policing" seeing as how he's been a policeman for over five decades, begs to differ...

COULD ARIZONA LAW COST REPUBLICANS GOVERNOR AND SENATOR SEATS?

Posted on April 27, 2010
So far this year we've been hearing that Democrats will lose seats left and right. But some think that Arizona Hispanics, who represent one-third of the state's voters, will severely punish the GOP. John McCain has tried to appeal to the Republican base and supported the bill and all three GOP candidates for governor, including Governor Jan Brewer, have also advocated for the new legislation...

IS REAL TARGET OF ARIZONA LAW HISPANIC US CITIZENS?

Posted on April 27, 2010
Left-wing reporter Greg Palast argues that the new Arizona law has nothing to do with stopping illegal immigration and everything to do with targeting the Hispanic US citizens in the state - nearly 30% of Arizonans - who vote overwhelmingly Democrat. Palast lays out the case that the state's GOP has been engaged in a long war on these citizens that involves uppressing their votes and driving them from the state.

CHRISTIAN ORGANIZATION VOWS TO DEFY ARIZONA LAW

Posted on April 26, 2010
The Sojourners are condemning the new law and promising civil disobedience. Here is their leader Reverend Jim Wallace's statement: The law signed today by Arizona Gov. Brewer is a social and racial sin, and should be denounced as such by people of faith and conscience across the nation...

ARIZONA TAXPAYERS WILL NOW HAVE TO PAY FOR LAWYERS FOR IMMIGRANTS

Posted on April 26, 2010
Kudos to my colleague Elissa Taub who pointed out something rather interesting that none of the supporters of the Arizona law have told Arizonans. Under federal immigration law, a removal proceeding is a civil proceeding and one is not entitled to a public defender or any assistance in paying for help from an immigration lawyer...

JEWISH ORGANIZATIONS SPEAK OUT AGAINST ARIZONA LAW

Posted on April 25, 2010
Even though America's Jewish community includes virtually known of the folks being targeted by the anti-immigrant law in Arizona, members of the community get nervous when they see individuals in another minority group being targeted unjustly. Laws that demand that people show their papers make Jews especially concerned since in generations past (think Nazi Germany) in other countries, similar laws were part of campaigns of persecution...

SHERIFF JOE READY TO GO TO TOWN WITH NEW LAW

Posted on April 25, 2010
Not a surprising, but it does show that Governor Brewer's promise to keep police in line is worthless.

BIPARISAN CALL FOR ENDING DEPORTATION OF STUDENTS

Posted on April 25, 2010
A piece of good news on immigration was largely overshadowed by the Arizona mess. Republican Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana and Democrat Dick Durbin sent a letter to DHS Secretary Napolitano urging her to stop the deportations of students who might be eligible for relief if the DREAM Act or comprehensive immigration reform should pass...

REID TO GRAHAM: YOU HAVE THREE WEEKS TO DELIVER REPUBLICANS OR WE'RE DOING IT OURSELVES

Posted on April 25, 2010
Tough talk from the Senate Majority Leader. Some, including my good friend Tamar Jacoby, think this is a really bad idea. I'm not so sure. I think fear of losing the Hispanic vote for a generation or more and the sudden urgency of the situation created by the Arizona fiasco could make responsible Republicans at least seek to block a filibuster and allow for a majority vote (as seems likely with financial regulatory reform)...

PHOENIX MAY SUE STATE OF ARIZONA

Posted on April 24, 2010
My guess is that Arizona's largest city is going to be the first in a long line of plaintiff's challenging the constitutionality of SB10780.

H-1B NUMBERS BEING USED AT A SLOW PACE

Posted on April 24, 2010
USCIS just released its figures on H-1B usage for the second week of the H-1B filing season. Just 100 visas were requested across the entire country, bring the total requested for the fiscal year beginning in October to 13,600.

THE ARIZONA BOYCOTT

Posted on April 24, 2010
This was inevitable. As Chris Hayes of The Nation told Keith Olbermann this evening, a boycott could "recalculate the incentives" for the citizens of Arizona and the politicians in the state. Once Super Bowls and major conventions start to go elsewhere (as was the case two decades ago when a similar boycott was successfully used to protest the state's failure to recognize the Martin Luther King holiday), the cavalier anti-immigrant positions will become a lot more expensive...

ARIZONA GOVERNOR PULLS THE TRIGGER

Posted on April 23, 2010
I'm blogging from my iPhone and by now most of you have heard that the Arizona law that makes it a crime to be Hispanic is a law. Later this evening I'll be covering how the country is reacting, including the President. Stay tuned.

WEIGHING IN ON ARIZONA OVERREACH

Posted on April 22, 2010
Ed Schultz thinks the Arizona bill has forced the White House to deal with immigration reform sooner than they otherwise might have. Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy The Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police issue a statement opposing the bill (somehow I doubt Sheriff Joe approved)...

PELOSI TELLS REID: IMMIGRATION CAN MOVE AHEAD OF CLIMATE BILL

Posted on April 22, 2010
Another sign we're about to get in to a serious debate over immigration reform. From Roll Call: According to Senate Democratic aides, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) agreed during a Tuesday afternoon meeting that a ?moral imperative? exists to move immigration reform in 2010...
