Create Your Own Podcast Feeds

Posted on December 22, 2009
While listening to this week's episode of my favorite podcast, This Week in Google, I learned about a cool new tool called Huffduffer. This nifty tool addresses a need I have had for some time: the ability to create your own podcast feed out of any audio file you find on the Internet. I subscribe to a lot of different podcasts, and I love that new podcasts are automatically downloaded to my computer as they are available. However, occasionally I'll find an audio interview or random podcast that doesn't have an RSS feed, so I can't program it to download to my PC. Huffduffer was designed for those random files. After you register, you'll get a bookmarklet for your browser - when you see an audio file you'd like to keep, just "Huffduff it," and the file will get added to a special RSS feed...

2009: Rise of the Mobile Platform

Posted on December 10, 2009
When we look back on 2009 in terms of technology trends, one of the most important, surely, will be the meteoric rise of mobile technology. Clearly, "there's an app for that" will go down as one of the big catchphrases of the year. That's why Dennis Kennedy and I wanted to do a podcast on the importance of the mobile platform for lawyers, and our latest episode of The Kennedy-Mighell Report is called Going Mobile: The Rise of the Mobile Platform. We also had a special guest on the show - Jeremy Diviney of Bill4Time talked about how Software as a Service (SaaS) is critical to the success of mobile technologies. And we ended, as usual, with our Parting Shots, this time with holiday gift suggestions for smartphones and Twyla Tharp on collaboration...

ABA's Blawg 100: Vote! (For Me, or Someone Else)

Posted on December 09, 2009
I am honored and privileged to have been named to the ABA Blawg 100 for the third straight year. The list represents "the 100 best web sites by lawyers, for lawyers, as chosen by the editors of the ABA Journal." The legal blogs have been broken down into ten categories, Legal News, Legal Theory, IMHO, Geo (Location-Specific), Practice-Specific, Business, Careers, Tech, Justice, and Lighter Fare. As you might imagine, I am one of 10 listed in the Tech category. Although I'm pleased to have been included, I'm also a bit shocked; after all, in the past few years the blog has devolved to pretty much the "Blawg of the Day" channel, as I haven't had the time to do more than feature some of the great new law blogs that come out weekly on the Internet...

Maintaining a Positive Outlook

Posted on December 08, 2009
If you use Outlook as your primary email program, I'd wager that you spend a lot of your average day working in that program. And Microsoft would prefer it that way - that's why it takes care of most of the things you need during the work day - email, calendars, contacts, and tasks. But for something that we use so often, most of us don't use it properly, or make the most of its capabilities. Microsoft wants to help us out with that. They've published a great 40-page document called Best Practices for Microsoft Outlook 2007. It's a really good collection of tips and tricks for using Outlook 2007 in more productive ways. The Outlook team that published this article also put together some basic principles of good time management that are worth reprinting here: Basic principles of good time management Outlook 2007 is a tool to help you manage your e-mail, calendar, contacts, and tasks...

Blawg of the Day - Res Ipsa Loquitur

Posted on December 08, 2009
I'm always intrigued when I find a big-firm blogger operating her own, non-firm-branded blog. One such new blog is Res Ipsa Loquitur, otherwise known as "The Canadian Law Blog that Speaks for Itself." It's published by Pamela Pengelley, a lawyer with Cozen & O'Connor. The topics covered are pretty general, from a Canadian perspective - civil litigation, discovery, insurance, juries, subrogation, privacy, and more.
