How NOT To Get Off A Jury

Posted on December 03, 2008
Jurors. They are the people our clients entrust with their lives and futures. In theory, they are our client's peers, but for the most part? They can be a real bunch of tools and are mostly out of touch with the lives many of our clients live. As investigators, sometimes we have an attorney's ear AND the time and resources to sit through what is commonly called Voir Dire which is legalspeak for what regular people like you and me call Jury Selection...

Life Is Good

Posted on November 05, 2008
I don't think the feeling I have right now, in my heart and in my mind...will ever be matched again in my lifetime. We are on a new path...change is here, and its never felt better!I do want to add that California voter really screwed the pooch on most of the propositions...

A Blast From The Past

Posted on October 27, 2008
You may remember these guys from a commerical about 8 years ago...they are back again and this time, they aren't pitching beer. The original version plays and then its followed by the new version which is a bit darker than the original but might leave you with a nice lump in your throat:Yeah, I know I said I was going to be doing more investigation related posts but I HAD to post this!

I Almost Crapped My Pants Laughing

Posted on October 22, 2008
Totally unrelated to public defense, but instead of being the A**hole that forwards this to all his friends, I decide to just post this clip here for your amusement on this crazy, crazy Hump Day:Politics in No Time @ Yahoo! Video

I am not sure if anyone will be listening, but I'm gonna be talking.

On occasion I like to re-read some of the crap that has been produced from my fingertips in past blawg entries.  My first ever post was on February 10, 2005.  I thought I was breaking some crazy, wild ground in the world of criminal defense investigators?becoming the first blogging PDI!I'm starting this blog because quite honestly, we PD Investigator's deserve to get a little attention and/or recognition once in a while...

Jeezus

Posted on October 03, 2008
I went to my friends house to watch the VP Debate and eat dinner...unfortunately my friends Tivo was on the fritz and all we got to watch was the talking heads after the debate...I got a little irritated but knew I had the debate recorded at my own house, so no big deal...

Raising The Bar

Posted on September 22, 2008
I have been enjoying the first season of Raising The Bar so far, although for reasons I can?t really explain, I should say that I?ve already watched the first few episodes on DVD and this week will finally be a new episode for me. There was a story on David Feige (Indefensible) in Bloomberg...

A Question From A Juror...

Posted on August 13, 2008
I received the following letter last night, and although its waaaay past my bedtime, I decided to try tackling it with an honest answer. I'm sure I f*cked it all up and confused this juror more than I helped in answering his/her question but I will only blame my need for sleep and my need to have a new post on my blawg today...

Raising The Bar

Posted on August 07, 2008
Its good to see the much rumored television series (Raising the Bar on TNT) based on a group of young Deputy Public Defenders, Deputy DA's and their battles in and out of the courtroom has made it off the ground and is scheduled to make it to our local television screens on September 1st!The best part of this is that one of our very own, David Feige (blawger at Indefensible and author of Indefensible) is credited alongside Stephen Bochco as one of the creator's! This is so cool! Also, as you can see in the image above that Mark-Paul Gosselaar is in the show (playing one of the good guys!)...

2007 Investigator Of The Year...Here Is A Fist In Your Eyesocket

Posted on August 06, 2008
I've never known positive things to happen when a friend tries to help another friend out in a bar scuffle. Lets send some positive thoughts out to a fellow Public Defender Investigator from Iowa who is recovering from a beating he took in a bar fight: An investigator with the Dubuque Public Defender's Office was assaulted while trying to break up a fight at a local bar Friday, according to a criminal complaint...

Myspace Investigation News

Posted on July 22, 2008
I found an interesting post on the Facebook page of an old blogger friend, a recent story on the impact of Social Networking websites on defendants in court:PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? Two weeks after Joshua Lipton was charged in a drunken driving crash that seriously injured a woman, the 20-year-old college junior attended a Halloween party dressed as a prisoner...

Where There Is Smoke...

Posted on July 17, 2008
....there is really disgusting air quality. So, I toyed with the idea of disappearing again but I decided against it. There is something about this blawg I just don't want to give up. Maybe its because I've had a few scares in the last year and a half which involved the possibility of being outed as the author of TOAPDI...

A Tale Of Two Smiles

Posted on June 09, 2008
Okay, so politics aside...after looking at the photograph below on Politico.Com I decided that I needed to finally say what needs to be said. Unlike the natural smile of Obama, McCain needs to embrace being a curmudgeon and just STOP SMILING. Its creepy and painful looking...

Non-Lethal Taser Is Lethal...Again

Posted on May 29, 2008
One of my daily Google Alerts alerted me to yet ANOTHER death potentially as a result of police officer's use of a taser. I think at some point, we need to figure out what other non-violent methods of restraint can be used for out of control individuals...

Ummm...Another Reason We Should Have Formal County Public Defender Offices?

Posted on May 21, 2008
I read this story out of Warren County, NY and I thought to myself...Self, this shit must go on alllll the time!Christopher T. Adams has been indicted on 35 counts of making false statements and theft for allegedly ripping off the county of over $40,000 by submitting false invoices for work that he allegedly did not perform...

One Of The Reasons I Love California...

Posted on May 16, 2008
Is that on occassion....NOT ALWAYS....but on occassion, our California Supreme Court actually gets things right.I was at work yesterday when I heard the news:SAN FRANCISCO - California's Supreme Court declared gay couples in the nation's biggest state can marry ? a monumental but perhaps short-lived victory for the gay rights movement Thursday that was greeted with tears, hugs, kisses and at least one instant proposal of matrimony...

Really Quick

Posted on April 20, 2008
I will be commenting a bit more on the recent report on Defense Services in California completed by the California Commission On The Fair Administration Of Justice. I didn't want y'all to think that my last post was going to be the end of it!Note: What do you folks think of this Courier font? Better than the Arial I normally like to use or is it too boring? You don't care, do you?

Defending Ourselves

Posted on April 20, 2008
Its very difficult for many people to understand. Our local and federal governments actually PAY people money to defend people accused of crimes. Sometimes they get paid A LOT of money. Sometimes.I work for a county office, so my check comes directly from the county...

Desperate Times

Posted on April 15, 2008
Serving the public and being employed by a State/Local government has some great benefits but the downside is...Budget cuts.No job is 100% guaranteed but it still sucks to hear that other Public Defender offices are going to suffer budget cutbacks...which is a not so nice way of saying, Layoffs...

Fallen Brother

Posted on April 04, 2008
You may have already read about the death of Robert Hooker in a blog or two or even three. Maybe you even read about him in the newspaper. It's a tragic story, deaths in vehicles alway are I suppose, but it really hits home when it happens to one of our own...

2 New Potential Databases

Posted on March 13, 2008
I forgot to mention two new databases of interest in my last post!Unless you haven't picked up a newspaper in the last week, you should have heard about a new website that lets your comment on police officers nationwide called RateMyCop.Com. Of course the police unions are saying that the site puts the lives of law enforcement in danger and as always, its being totally blow out of proportion...

A Sad Realization

Posted on March 13, 2008
I've come to terms with certain facts in my life and realized I have to live and accept the following four truths:1. I will be dead before someone finally gets around to inventing a Lightsaber.2. I will never be able to hold Penelope Cruz in my arms and sing her a love song...

I Hate Politicians...Except For Obama.

Posted on March 10, 2008
Don't lawmakers have better things to do with their time than worry about Anonymous people on the internet? It kills me sometimes. Just kill me.

Inspiration Found

Posted on February 17, 2008
Today, I found a little bit of inspiration from a very unlikely person...Private Investigator Jack Palladino.Palladino is a famous investigator from San Francisco (Google him for more info) who is well known for his involvement in high profile civil and criminal cases, apparently a client was (still is?) President Bill Clinton (apparently he can neither confirm or deny it)...
