: ConglomerateCan The Government Do A Deal With BP For $20 billion?
By Gordon Smith, Christine, Hurt, Vic Fleischer, Fred Tung, Lisa Fairfax, David Zaring
I opined earlier that the president couldn't mandate that BP set aside $20 billion for Gulf Coast liabilities, but he didn't do that, he cajoled them to do so. Is that okay? Some Republicans suggested otherwise, but I'm not so troubled. There may be some limits to the President's powers to do deals and settle potential disputes, but they are few. The executive branch, through the Department of Justice, settles, or quasi-settles, cases all the time. Anyway, you could read more about this in this New York Post piece - a paper in which I've long hoped to appear.
