Cracker Meal Mistake Brings Recall

By Dan Flynn and Suzanna Schreck

ADVERTISEMENTS
When you've got wheat and milk in your cracker meal, you need to say so on the label or face the consequences.

The Murphy House in Louisburg, NC is going through just such an experience now with the recall of 414 pounds of Brunswick stew meat because they contain cracker meal with those undeclared allergens.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall Thursday.

The following products are subject to recall:

-5-pound packages of "MURPHY HOUSE BARBECUE OUR OLD FASHIONED BRUNSWICK STEW" produced on April 2, 2010.

-24-ounce cups of "MURPHY HOUSE OUR OLD FASHIONED BRUNSWICK STEW" produced on April 2, 2010.

Each package bears the establishment number "EST. 2135" inside the USDA mark of inspection. Cases and individual packages bear the sell-by date of 05/17/10.

The beef stew products were distributed at the wholesale and retail level in North Carolina.

FSIS personnel discovered the problem during a Food Safety Assessment of operations at the establishment. FSIS has received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an allergic reaction should contact a physician.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers (including restaurants) of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

Consumer and media inquiries regarding the recall should be directed to Josh Whitely, Vice President, at (919) 496-6054.
