Under-processed Canned Meat and Poultry Recalled

By Dan Flynn and Suzanna Schreck

ADVERTISEMENTS
In what is the 58th recall of the year involving meat and poultry, just over 12,000 pounds of under-processed meat and poultry products were recalled late Thursday by Seward, IL-based Eickman's Processing.
No illnesses have yet been associated with the recalled products.  The under processing problem was discovered by the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service during a routine food safety assessment.
FSIS said the under-processed meat and poultry recall is a Class I event with a high health risk.
The following products are subject to recall:

  • 14-ounce glass jars of "Lena UMW Country Mince Meat"

  • 14-ounce glass jars of "Eickman's Canned Chicken" with bar code # 03340
00050
  • 14-ounce glass jars of "Eickman's Canned Pork" with bar code # 03340 00040

  • 14-ounce glass jars of "Eickman's Canned Beef" with bar code # 03340 00030

  • 14-ounce glass jars of "CJ's Country Canned Beef" with bar code # 91411 00001

The recalled products were produced between Nov. 7, 2007 and April 7, 2010, and distributed to retail establishments in Northern Illinois.
When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on FSIS' website at www.fsis.usda.gov/FSIS_Recalls/Open_Federal_Cases/index.asp.
FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify that recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.
