: Threat LevelNew Obama Halloween Video Satirizes Robocalls
By Ryan Singel, Kevin Poulsen, Sarah Lai Stirland, Kim Zetter, and David Kravets
This Halloween, America faces a new menace, according to Barack Obama's campaign: Robocalls.
The campaign's mashed up classic movie footage to make light of the robocalls that have been hammering voters in their homes in battleground states this election season.
The video follows a more serious effort the campaign launched last week that maps all the misleading calls and flyers that have been going out. The page, called " Under the Radar," shines the spotlights on the attacks, tells voters where they're happening, and rebuts them with excerpts of newspaper articles that have debunked the allegations.
McCain isn't the only one doing robocalls, though. The Obama campaign is sending them out too, as are anonymous, third party groups.
For more background on these kinds of calls, which some argue have been rendered ineffective by the internet, check out Citizens for Civil Discourse' list of the calls.
