: China HearsayRepublican Outreach to the Asian Community
By Stan
A quick comment on U.S. politics. The political dialogue in D.C. these last two weeks has been dominated with discussions about President Obama’s nomination to the Supreme Court, which is the highest court in the country.
The candidate in question, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, is very well qualified as well as being politically attractive (female, Hispanic, nice up-from-the-streets life story).
Republicans have attacked her as being a “reverse racist” in that she thinks being a Latina makes her better qualified to issue opinions than, presumably, white males. This argument is based on a misreading of a speech she gave some years ago and is political hackery at its worst.
Not to waste a good opportunity, the Republican-leaning National Review, in attacking Judge Sotomayor on this issue, decided to run with a cover designed to not only piss off Democrats, the Hispanic community, and perhaps women, but . . . get this . . . Asians.
Hard to believe that someone thought this was a good idea:
This whole thing is yet another reason why it is a very good thing that the adults (i.e. the Obama foreign policy team) are back in charge and the nut job Bushies have been thrown out of office. Not a big mystery why these guys weren’t so good at diplomacy.
I wonder how the Republicans would react if a prominent newspaper in an Asian country used a caricature of Jesus Christ on the front page to belittle a political opponent? I think in Alabama, they would consider this an act of war.
As if the above wasn’t enough, I also saw this today:
Yesterday at a think tank in DC, Rep. Mark Kirk (R) said he had met privately with Chinese government leaders and told them not to believe official US government budget numbers. Or, in other words, that US government debt isn’t as good an investment as we say it is.
You just gotta love these guys.
