: Kentucky Law BlogKBA Young Lawyers Section Seeking Volunteer Lawyers for Disaster Assistance
By Michael Stevens
From the Kentucky Bar Association:
Dear Colleagues --
At the request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Young Lawyers Section of the Kentucky Bar Association is seeking volunteers to assist with disaster legal services in response to severe storms, tornadoes, flooding, and mudslides that devastated hundreds of residents of the Commonwealth on May 1.
In conjunction with the ABA Young Lawyers Division, we are asking for your assistance by providing legal services for those in need. Presently, residents of 61 of Kentucky's 120 counties are now eligible for disaster legal services.
While Kentucky attorneys in those areas may be most familiar with the destruction, attorneys anywhere in the state can volunteer to help - not just those in the impacted areas. Some of the expected issues will involve life, medical and property insurance as well as access to government benefits.
A toll-free number has been established for victims of this disaster to call (877-445-8763), and media outlets have responded to our news release by alerting the public of the availability of this service. Callers have been requested to identify that they are seeking disaster-related legal assistance, and those who qualify for assistance will be referred to a legal aid organization or matched with Kentucky lawyers who have volunteered to provide free legal help. In addition, information for victims will be posted at http://www.kydisasterlegalrelief.com.
Your assistance is needed. To volunteer, please contact Scott Laufenberg, Chair of the KBA Young Lawyers Section Disaster Legal Relief Committee, at slaufenberg@kscvlaw.com, or by phone at (270) 782-8160.
Counties eligible for disaster legal services include: Adair, Allen, Anderson, Barren, Bath, Bourbon Boyd, Boyle, Butler, Carter, Casey, Christian, Clark, Clinton, Crittenden, Cumberland, Edmonson, Elliott, Estill, Fleming, Franklin, Garrard, Green, Greenup, Hardin, Hart, Henry, Hopkins, Jackson, Jessamine, Larue, Lee, Leslie, Lewis, Lincoln, Livingston, Logan, Madison, Magoffin, Marion, Menifee, Mercer, Metcalfe, Monroe, Montgomery, Nelson, Nicholas, Ohio, Owen, Powell, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Rowan, Russell, Simpson, Taylor, Warren, Wayne, Washington, Woodford, and Wolfe.
Thanks so much for your help.
