On Thursday, federal Judge James V. Selna seemed poised to dismiss a case brought by former FBI informant Craig Monteilh against the federal agency. Monteilh alleged law enforcement agencies violated his civil rights and endangered his life while he was working undercover.
That was yesterday. Today Selna changed the tentative ruling and gave attorneys 20 days to amend their complaint against the FBI and Barbara Walls, the assistant special agent in charge.
Monteilh worked for years as an informant for the FBI, and between 2006 and 2008 posed as a Muslim convert at several mosques in the county, including the Islamic Center of Irvine. Monteilh claims to have provided information on leaders from the Islamic community in Orange County, and identified Middle Eastern men at gyms for his FBI handlers.
