Parents suing construction firm and school officials in rape case

By Richard Binder

ADVERTISEMENTS

A story in the San Bernardino Sun from earlier this week says a suit has been filed against a Rancho Cucamonga construction company that allegedly assigned a registered sex offender to supervise a project at Cesar Chavez Middle School, where he molested and raped a 13-year-old.

The suit, brought by the victim's parents, allege that school officials failed to investigate Daniel Jay Hecht, a twice-convicted sex offender who is the son-in-law of an owner of the construction company, and allowed him to have access to the campus and students. They further allege that school officials, upon hearing of the abuse, failed to protect the girl.  The suit is aimed at school officials and police as well as the construction firm.

The parents are suing in civil court or $5 million in damages for the girl and $2 million for her parents. Hecht was convicted of the crime last year and was sentenced to 24 years in state prison.
