UK ISP BT Refuses Requests for Subscriber Data

By james_fudge

ADVERTISEMENTS

After the dust up between BT and ACS: Law over leaked documents containing subscriber data (which was sent unencrypted to ACS: Law and then leaked due to a security breach at the hands of Internet hackers), some ISPs in the United Kingdom are resisting other law firms' requests for data on users suspected of illegal file-sharing. UK ISPs BT and Plusnet (a division of BT) refused to hand over subscriber data to lawyers representing record label Ministry of Sound, and asked the High Court for an adjournment of the hearing.

Their objections in court follow a subscriber data leak from ACS: Law two weeks ago after the Internet group 4 chan/ Anonymous waged war on the firm's web site and obtained all of the company's email archives. The hearing has adjourned until January 2011. Chief Master Winegarten made the ruling. Gallant Macmillan is representing Ministry of Sound.

BT and Plusnet said that the companies are seeking a moratorium on outstanding applications and orders from various law firms dealing in this kind of commerce (suing file sharers).
