SENATE PASSES SCORE OF JUDGES, FIRST FEMALE HISPANIC PROSECUTOR
"The state Senate on Thursday confirmed 19 judges for the Superior Court statewide and two prosecutors, including New Jersey's first female Hispanic prosecutor, Camelia Valdes, who succeeds James Avigliano in Passaic County. Sussex County Prosecutor David Weaver was approved for a second, five-year term. Three of the new judges are from Bergen County ? Margaret Foti, Charles Powers Jr. and Ronny Siegel ? and three are from Passaic County ? Greta-Ann Gooden-Brown, Bruno Mongiardo and Joseph Portelli. The other 13 judges are Terrence Cook of Burlington County; Catherine Fitzpatrick of Mercer County; Colleen Flynn and Barry Weisberg of Middlesex County; Stephanie Wauters of Ocean County; Robert Gilson of Sussex County; James Hely of Union County; Catherine Enright and Maryann Nergaard of Morris County; Paul Escandon of Monmouth County; Thomas Moore and Carolyn Wright of Essex County; and James Savio of Atlantic County."

JUSTICE ALBIN CONFIRMED FOR TENURE
"Supreme Court Justice Barry Albin won tenure from the state Senate on Thursday in a 27-11 vote, largely along party lines. Four GOP senators ? Christopher Bateman of Somerset, Philip Haines of Burlington County, Sean Kean of Monmouth County and Thomas Kean Jr. of Union County ? joined the Democrats in confirming Albin. On June 22, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 8-4, also mostly on party lines, to recommend confirmation after a four-hour hearing. Albin, 56, who was appointed to the Court in 2002 by Gov. James McGreevey, may serve until reaching age 70 in 2023"

LAWYERS' LOSS OF FILES ADDS SPOLIATION TO LEGAL MALPRACTICE SUIT
"A legal malpractice suit in Hudson County shows how lawyers cause trouble when they don't safeguard clients' files. Two law firms accused of botching the sale of a gas station in 2000 can't find their records of their work, and a judge says the disgruntled ex-client can add a negligent spoliation claim to the complaint. The dispute, which may be heading to an appeals court, has made the sideshow over files more intriguing than the main event in the malpractice case against two West New York firms, Greenberg, Walden & Grossman and the office of Robert Mayerovic.

BUCHANAN INGERSOLL CUTS ASSOCIATE PAY
"Ruling in a case that struck a chord with families nationwide, Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney has made a few adjustments in response to the recession, including cutting associate compensation. John Barbour, who took over this month as the firm's CEO, announced last Thursday that the firm has reduced associate compensation by 5 to 10 percent a year. That would bring starting salaries to about $108,000 to $110,000, down from $120,000 to $135,000. Barobur said the cuts in associates' compensation would be done on a case-by-case basis, taking into account such factors as billable hours, profitability and work quality. The cuts will take effect July 1."

A LOOK AT THE WILENTZ COURT FROM WITHIN: PART 8
"In the eighth of nine installments of his book, "What Makes a Court Supreme," printed in the New Jersey Law Journal, Justice Daniel O'Hern focuses on his legal interests, particularly making complex matters understandable, and the public figures he admired. O'Hern was called 'mayor' and 'monsignor'; by his colleagues on the bench; the first for his years as Red Bank's top official and the second for his reputation for excising unnecessary graphic details from sex cases ? not out of religious conviction but out of good taste."
