ETISH TO TAKE POST AS NEW JERSEY STATE BAR PRESIDENT
"Allen Etish, a 59-year-old Cherry Hill lawyer who learned his first lessons in the art of persuasion selling furniture at his family's store, will take the helm of New Jersey's largest lawyers group on Thursday, becoming president of the State Bar Association at its Annual Meeting and Convention at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City. During his term as president, Etish says he plans to marshal the energy of the association to help lawyers adapt and thrive during these difficult economic times. Those who know him say his ability to connect with people from all walks of life, and his passion for the law and lawyers, will make him an ideal president of the State Bar during a challenging time in the profession."

TOWN TO PAY $4.9M TO HARASSMENT SUIT WITNESSES CLAIMING RETALIATION
"Teaneck Township has agreed to pay a total of $4.9 million to settle suits by a former policeman and a former fireman who claimed they were retaliated against for testifying in harassment suits brought by co-workers. The bulk of the payout goes to ex-cop John Shouldis, who testified in a sexual-harassment suit by officer Diane Mancini that resulted in a $1.5 million verdict in 2000. The rest goes to Matthew Vogelman, who testified in the harassment suit of former fireman Bill Brennan that settled for $800,000 in 200."

WORLD B. FREE SUING NIKE OVER SHOE NAMED WITHOUT HIS SAY-SO
"Former NBA star World B. Free is suing Nike in Superior Court in Camden County for marketing a commemorative basketball shoe in his name without his permission. The former Philadelphia 76ers point guard, who changed his name from Lloyd Bernard Free to World B. Free in 1980 as part of a campaign for peace and tranquility, alleges Nike's planned June 12 rollout appears timed to take attention away from an eponymous line of shoes and clothing launched this month by a small German company, K1X, with Free's authorization."

U.S. NEWS LOOKS INTO BROOKLYN LAW SCHOOL'S SURVEY RESPONSE
"U.S. News & World Report is 'investigating' Brooklyn Law School's responses to the magazine's annual survey used to rank the country's top law schools, specifically with respect to part-time students. The magazine said it would look into the matter after some rival law schools noted that Brooklyn Law wasn't listed in the part-time ranking and questioned whether the school also excluded part-time students in its responses for the overall ranking in an effort to boost its ranking. Brooklyn, which ranked no. 61 among 184 law schools, acknowledged that it didn't include some information for part-time students partly because it disagrees with the magazine's methodology, and due to an inadvertent error."

AMID SOME TEARS, SOUTER BIDS ADIEU AT THIRD CIRCUIT CONFERENCE
"In a farewell speech that brought tears to a few eyes, U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter invoked a 19th century English poet and legendary federal appeals Judge Learned Hand as he implored the judges and lawyers of the Third Circuit to derive a sense of lasting fulfillment from the work they do every day. For his entire tenure on the Supreme Court, Souter has served as the 'circuit justice' for the Third Circuit, handling emergency motions that come from the circuit. This year's visit from Souter was 'especially poignant,' Chief Judge Anthony Scirica said, as a result of the news last week that Souter will be retiring at the end of the high court's term in June."
