: New York Supreme Court Criminal Term LibraryPolice Seek Economic Stimulus Aid
By David Badertscher, PLL
Source: Crime and Justice News, January 7, 2008.
"Law enforcement supporters would like funds in the economic stimulus bill to be considered by Congress to include support for hiring police officers, but the Washington Post has taken an early shot at the idea. 'The mere mention of so much new spending has brought out lobbyists by the score,' the newspaper says in an editorial, citing a hearing scheduled for tomorrow by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT). 'Worthy as this might be, it has only a remote connection to jump-starting the economy,' says the Post'"Fiscal stimulus must be, as the economists' mantra goes, targeted, timely and temporary.' "
"Law enforcement backers are expected to argue that poor economic conditions do contribute to increasing crime. Scheduled witnesses at tomorrow's hearing include Burlington, Vt., police chief Michael Schirling, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey, former Associate Attorney General John Schmidt of Chicago, Mary Lou Leary of the National Center for Victims of Crime (another former Justice Department official) and David Muhlhausen of the Heritage Foundation."
