Judiciary asks Congress for more bankruptcy judges

"With the economy down and bankruptcy filings up to near-record levels, the federal judiciary is asking Congress to approve additional bankruptcy judgeships to handle the workload. 'Our judicial resources are strained, and the cost to society of an overburdened bankruptcy system, especially in this economic climate, is enormous,' said U.S. District Judge Barbara Lynn, head of the Judicial Conference Committee on the Administration of the Bankruptcy" System.

Companies seek to sanction DOJ over lost evidence in drug pricing case

"Health care products company Abbott Laboratories and pharmaceutical company Dey Inc. asked a Massachusetts federal court to sanction the U.S. Department of Justice for destroying evidence in a multidistrict wholesale drug pricing case".

Insurers coming under law enforcement scrutiny for practices abroad

Holder says report on interrogation weeks away

"A Justice Department watchdog is modifying its report on the lawyers who wrote opinions authorizing harsh interrogation tactics, and the report is still weeks away from becoming public, Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. said Wednesday. Holder also said that the full report might never become public because some information in it is classified, though he said he wants to release as much as he can."

OPINION

Beware of shadow bankruptcy

"With Chrysler's sale to Fiat past the U.S. Supreme Court, and with General Motors commencing its own "surgical" bankruptcy on the Chrysler model, it may be tempting to think that we've turned a corner: Tentative deals with most major stakeholders of the automakers assure a quick trip through the Chapter 11 emergency room. Now, we might think, it is just a matter of convalescence. This sense of relief may help to explain why the S&P 500 stock market index reached a 2009 high the same day GM declared bankruptcy."
