: The GavelBreyer Mulls Facebook and Constitution
By Peter Hardin
Even though the Supreme Court doesn’t have a Facebook page, it’s time for the court’s justices to adapt to a Facebook world, Justice Stephen Breyer says.
He was puzzled when he saw a movie called “The Social Network” about the beginnings of Facebook, Justice Breyer told an audience at Vanderbilt Law School.
Yet the movie backs up his view that modern circumstances should inform justices who are interpreting a Constitution written in the 1700s, he said, according to an Associated Press article.
“If I’m applying the First Amendment, I have to apply it to a world where there’s an Internet, and there’s Facebook, and there are movies like … ‘The Social Network,’ which I couldn’t even understand,” Justice Breyer said.
