Stuck in January? Tired of carving ice sculptures? Looking for something court-related to do? Court-o-rama has all the answers!
- Hmmm, anything that must be amended 700 times in a 22-year time span should probably go back to the drawing board. Such is life for the US sentencing guidelines. What is their purpose? Do they work? Are they fair? Who knows! Attend one of a series of regional (that's right, NOT in DC but, perhaps, coming to your town) public hearings. The first one will be held in Atlanta, February 10-11. Stay tuned for more.
- Gotta learn the language! We hear so much about the need for judges to be well-versed in science, but interpreters need to learn the terms and usage as well. The Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts will present Forensic Science in the Courtroom: Advance Criminal Forensics for Spanish Interpreters, January 30-February 1, at the AOC in Frankfort. This is the first we've heard of a course like this. Registration is due MONDAY, January 26!
- The Hawai'i State Judiciary is hosting a series entitled Lunch 'n' Learn the Law. The next installment covers small claims, and will be held on February 10. Upcoming topics include landlord/tenant law, wills and estate planning, credit and bankruptcy, advance directives, labor law, support and custody, "How and When to Use a Lawyer and How to Find One," online legal research, and elder law. All occur in Honolulu at the Supreme Court, but some sessions have been or will be taped for future viewing. Oddly enough, no actual lunch is served.
