: court-o-rama.orgThe Litigation Solution
By Anne Skove, Esq.
Recently we asked what can be done when extremely important court-related functions are cut from the budget.
Cry? Write angry letters to the editor? Hold elected officials accountable? Wait for a disaster to prove our point?
In Toledo, the court is suing the mayor and city council to provide adequate protection of the courthouse.
Would that they could find a better way! But crying won't help, angry letters go only so far, and perhaps the other solutions take too long when security of jurors, parties, witnesses, judges, and court staff is jeopardized.
See Toledo Municipal Court Judges File Petition in Fund Fight, Erica Blake, Toledo Blade (July 26, 2008).
Still, we wish they'd try something else. A lawsuit will only exacerbate this kind of friction. Courts need to get along with the more dangerous branches, or they suffer the consequences (see: Florida). Try not to go there.
