By Anne Skove, Esq.
To answer our own question: beginning of story...
Ohio, the self-described "heart of it all," is seeing yet more pre-election-day action. Recall that the SCOTUS kicked the same-day-voting (not to be confused with same-sex marriage, although with all the controversy and proposed waiting period, you'd never know it!) back to the state by vacating the federal order making the state SOS verify all the new names by yesterday.
Now, McCain Southwest Ohio campaign chair/Hamilton County Prosecutor Deters (rather than the GOP, who was party to the first SOS suit) has issued a subpoena to obtain unredacted registration records for some (but not all) citizens who voted during the voter registration/early voter window. "Widespread complaints of fraud" is the reason given. Who's complaining? "A variety of sources."
Next question: will Ohio need its very own Craig Waters? (Note to readers: he's no relation to John Waters, we asked -- so you don't have to!)
See Deters Subpoenas Voter Records, Stephen Majors, AP/Cincinnati Enquirer (October 18, 2008), and Hamilton County, Ohio Prosecutor & McCain SW Ohio Campaign Chair Subpoenas Voter Records, JMZ, Writes Like She Talks (October 18, 2008).
