DOJ Leads Federal Agencies In Student Loan Repayment

By Andrew Ramonas

ADVERTISEMENTS

The U.S. Justice Department helped more of its employees pay off student loans in 2009 than any other federal agency, the Office of Personnel Management announced Thursday.

The DOJ used more than $19.3 million in 2009 to help cover the college debts of about 2,350 of its staffers. Federal prosecutors were the leading recipients of student loan assistance, followed by criminal investigators.

The Federal Student Loan Repayment Program paid out in 2009 more than $61.8 million to about 8,450 federal employees in 36 federal agencies.

The program began in 2002 to recruit and retain federal workers. Agencies are allowed to make repayments up to $10,000 a year, with payouts limited at $60,000. Beneficiaries of the aid are required to work for at least three years in the federal government.
