Brooklyn Building Collapse Injures Four

By Paul Napoli

ADVERTISEMENTS

The collapse of a three-story building in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn has left three construction workers and one passerby injured, The New York Daily News reported.

A crew from China Perfect Construction, of Brooklyn, was renovating the building at 34 Conselyea Street to add a fourth floor when at about 1:30 Monday afternoon, the building fell.

The accident buried one worker up to his neck in rubble and another to his waist. A third worker suffered minor injuries. Other crewmembers and passersby attempted to dig the trapped workers out, one passerby injured in the effort.

'Contractors must be held responsible for their work, and in this case, it appears that critical supports to the building were removed,' Buildings Department spokesperson Tony Sclafani told The New York Daily News. He assured that violations and monetary penalties would be issued.

'We are working with the Department of Buildings to determine the cause of the collapse,' the building's owner Lucille Maundrell told The New York Post.

Built in 2008, the building received a violation from the Buildings Department in May 2009 for exterior cracks.

Construction companies must follow strict jobsite safety regulations, including rules governing heavy equipment operation and scaffolding, to ensure the safety of workers and the public. Regardless, carelessness or lack of following safety regulations by managers or other personnel running the job site is sometimes to blame when a worker is injured.

If you have been injured in a construction accident, you may be able to be compensated for your injury or a loved one's death if you talk to our lawyers. Many factors must be taken into consideration when determining if an injury or death was the result of negligence, equipment failure or dangerous worksite conditions. You may be entitled to compensation for things such as medical expenses, lost wages or pain and suffering for your injury, or the lost prospect of receiving an inheritance, loss of financial support and funeral expenses for the personal injury or wrongful death of a loved one.
