Off Duty Philly Cop Crashes into PA State Police

By Paul Napoli

ADVERTISEMENTS

February 22, 2010

An off-duty police officer with the Philadelphia Police Department was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after crashing into the back of a trooper's cruiser on I-95, NBC Philadelphia reported on their website www.nbcphiladelphia.com.\

Just before 4 a.m. Saturday morning, Matthew Sheeran and Michael Sadowski of the Pennsylvania State Police investigated an abandoned vehicle blocking the right lane of northbound I-95 near the Girard Avenue exit. Will Kane, of the Philadelphia Parking Authority, was on the scene and hooking up to the abandoned car to tow it away.

That is when off duty Philly police officer Matthew Sharkey, 23, drove his Toyota Corolla over a series of flares the PA State Police had arranged to alert motorists to the hazard and crashed into the back of the trooper's car. The velocity of the crash pushed the trooper's car forward into the rear end of the abandoned car. Sheeran was pinned between the two vehicles.

Kane used his tow truck to pull the abandoned car forward, freeing Sheeran.

Ambulances transported Sheeran, Kane and Sadowski to Hahnemann University Hospital. Sheeran was in guarded condition with a leg fracture, Sadowski sustained abrasions and lacerations from debris and Kane needed treatment for contusions, lacerations and abrasions he received while being under the abandoned car during the crash.

Sharkey and four passengers in his corolla had minor injuries.

PA State Police held Sharkey, a three-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, for suspicion of DUI of alcohol and/or controlled substances and tested him for those substances.
