: New York City Personal Injury LawyerNYC Sanitation Worker, Father of Two Killed on the Job
By Paul Napoli
January 26, 2010
An 11-year veteran of the Department of Sanitation of New York (DSNY) was killed as he collected garbage on his regular route Tuesday morning.
Frank Justich, 41, collected garbage from a trash container at about 7:45 a.m. near the corner of Ditmars Boulevard and 35th Street in Astoria when the driver of a tractor-trailer attempted to make a right turn, striking and pinning Justich to the sanitation truck. Paramedics performed CPR and transported Justich to Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens, where doctors pronounced him dead.
"This big truck made a wide turn and just hit him," a witness told the New York Daily News.
Justich, of Flushing, leaves behind a wife and two daughters, ages one and four. He is the seventh DSNY worker struck and killed by a vehicle the job since 2003.
Mayor Bloomberg offered his condolences to the family, saying, 'I know the prayers of 8.4 million New Yorkers are with him and his family.'
'The department mourns the loss of sanitation worker Frank Justich, who died in the line of duty this morning, serving the city that he loved so much,' said DSNY Commissioner John J. Doherty. 'Sanitation workers perform a dangerous and essential job helping to keep New York City safe and clean. He will be missed.'
