"Death of a Firefighter" still reverberates by Doug Bates The Oregonian Tuesday December 02, 2008, 7:28 PM Every once in a while it's reassuring to see that what a newspaper says on its editorial page can make a difference in the world, or at least generate a useful discussion...

Weekend at Bernie's, A totally guys' weekend

Posted on March 24, 2009
The Madoff investors who lost billions have to be fuming over the trustee's discovery of $75 million quietly sitting in Gibraltar while Madoff stays mum. Consider for a moment that the entire Bernie Madoff investment dream team remains sitting on the sidelines crying poverty while an account with $75 million waits for the commotion to settle down and someone to purchase a plane ticket to cash in...

TEXAS MEDICAL DREAM TEAM: Invitation Number 4, the doctor who . I'm not sure what to say to this one except he'll love Texas medical mistake protectionist legislation.

Posted on March 23, 2009
This doctor has a few problems that could potentially result in financial responsibility to patients but Texas will invite him with open arms and fatten his wallet at the same time; because after all it's about attracting the good, the bad and the ugly, at any cost...

Vacation Safety: Leap of faith?

Posted on March 23, 2009
Growing up, my family went on several mini-vacations each year. We'd go on weekend getaways to amusement parks, historic towns and even campgrounds. Sometimes our trips would consist of an all-out, fun-in-the-sun type of excursion; other times it'd be a ten hour car ride to look at the world's largest ball of yarn (thrilling, I know)...

Wei-Chuan Granulated Chicken Bouillon recalled.

Posted on March 22, 2009
What product is recalled? A California company has recalled over 89,000 pounds of chicken bouillon. Apparently U.S. Customs officials pointed out processed chicken was used that didn't meet our poultry inspection standards. What is the product? It's Wei-Chuan granulated chicken bouillon in 2...

Sentence Bernie Madoff to work at Wal-Mart

Posted on March 20, 2009
Wal-Mart is adding approximately $2 billion U.S. dollars to the benefit and incentive packages for hourly employees in the United States. That's a good sign. In a memo to Wal-Mart employees obtained by Reuters, Wal-Mart CEO Mike Duke said the retailer is awarding roughly $2 billion to U...

TEXAS MEDICAL DREAM TEAM: Invitation Number 3, The surgical team that flunked anatomy 101

Posted on March 20, 2009
Jordan Santana is only 15 but he knows a lot more about anatomy than does the surgical team that operated on the wrong finger. Being a Boston Red Sox fan this New York minute seems pretty A-Rod-ish to me. So join me today as Texas sends out invitation number 3 to the New York surgeon and surgical team that flunked anatomy 101 by operating on the wrong finger...

Vacation Safety: Hit the slopes (just not literally)

Posted on March 19, 2009
We all go on vacation with the intention of having a good time and relaxing; for most of us, our relaxed state of mind is the temporarily escaping the ‘real world' and the many pressures that come with it. For certain skiers and snowboarders (among other active individuals), a relaxed sense of being stems from the pain killers and various other meds that are pumped into their bodies with the hope of lessening the pain of their injuries...

Vacation Safety: Microwaving plastic plates and spoons may release melamine and formaldehyde into your food

Posted on March 18, 2009
Many of us are unaware that those plastic spoons and plates we take on vacation contain melamine. The manufacturer is supposed to warn the user by proper labeling but many are not doing so. The World Health Organization has studied and advised about the world wide melamine contamination problem...

Vacation Safety: Coming 'round the mountain

Posted on March 18, 2009
I just returned from a mini-vacation with my college roommates and I'm proud to say, 'I survived' (barely, but I did). Fortunately for us, we had tons of fun and all came back unscathed; however, on my return flight I saw not one, not two, but three individuals in wheelchairs due to accidents that occurred on their own weekend getaways...

TEXAS MEDICAL DREAM TEAM: COME ONE COME ALL. First invitation goes to the Doctor Who Couldn't Count

Posted on March 18, 2009
I feel badly with feeling good about Texas having tort reform that will attract all the Iowa doctors to Texas that make the biggest mistakes. I'm hopeful that doctors in Iowa who commit the most malpractice errors and therefore find their malpractice insurance premiums increasing will find the Texas protectionist legislation particularly appealing...

Mexican officials conclude the truck went off the road, then overcorrected and swerved into oncoming traffic striking the bus head on...

Construction Site Safety: At times the news media is clueless about how they report accidents.

Posted on March 16, 2009
The news report is a wall of rebar at the Gateway construction site 'just became loose and collapsed' on top of two construction workers. Can a construction wall suddenly just fall on construction workers? "Are you kidding?" "Oh yeah the sky fell in right after the wall collapsed...

Death of a Firefighter -- Part 1 in an editorial series

Posted on March 16, 2009
If you drink as an underage teenager read this story and watch the YouTube video. I've previously written (here and here) about how much a young adult can drink before dying, this story should demonstrate to you how situations can escalate that result in a person dying...

Posted on March 13, 2009
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2006 there were approximately 462,000 welding, soldiering, and brazing workers. The occupation was expected to grow only about five percent between the years 2006 and 2016. Aside from the fact that employment for welders is expected to 'grow more slowly than average,' job availability for welders remains optimistic due to employers' reports of inability to find qualified welders...

Vacation Safety: What lies beneath...

Posted on March 12, 2009
Dun-uh. Dun-un. Dun-uh. Okay – maybe this isn't working so well…I'm trying to convey the well-known musical notes from Jaws (I think the fact that I'm musically challenged is coming into play here…) This might work better: http://www...
